First day of school

Monday morning, Feb. 8th, I woke up around 6:30 am, which back home is 8:30, so the time difference wasn't bad. But I was still quite tired, so I stayed in bed a little past 7.

I finally met the family's dogs, who live in the back porch and back garden.

My breakfast. Instant coffee (which I still am not a fan of) and huge pieces of toast with butter and ham.

The lady of the house drove us to the college, with which the exchange takes place. We strolled to the reception, where we got visitor lanyards, so the staff knew we were there with permission. We then got directions to Costa for students and staff, where we could wait for our teacher to come and a member of staff to show us around a little.

The back of the main building has a nice yard :)

Somewhat more decent coffee and a jam doughnut.

Before 9 am we went back to the reception, where our teacher was waiting, and eventually got shown around the culinary/hospitality section of the school. Many new names and faces, different class rooms... I can remember faces but names don't stick with me instantly, at least not with the faces!
We were then told that we would attent a class with year 3 srudents. Kitchen work on the first day! I didn't have my work clothes with me, luckily they could lend me a chef's jacket, an apron and oven cloth.

I worked with another girl, and we prepped pork belly, a cut of pork we don't have in Finland. I took out the skin and the ribs from the belly and then cleaned the meat off the bones. The meat was then made into a paste with some apples and spread over the flat slab of belly, which was then rolled and packed tightly in cling film.

The bones were used to make pork stock.

And the rolled and packed pork belly was cooked in water for about five hours.

Apple slices going into a dehydrator.

After the preparation classes we went on a tour around the college. They showed us every department, from spa/beauty/hair salon, music and editing studios and performance arts to plumbing, capentry and welding.

An old joke, still very visible in our modern culture ;)

The scenery from the 8th floor of the tallest building on campus.

After the tour we went to have lunch in the school canteen. Rice, a chicken thigh in cream sauce and chips. Chips (or french fries) seem to be the most popular item over here, because they are served with almost everything :D

After school the teacher, who came over with us, wanted to go to a grocery store she saw from the 8th floor window earlier. It was out of my way back "home", but because I felt I shouldn't leave the other student by herself the first day, I walked there with them. Got some things I've wanted to taste.

While I regret going to that grocery store way out of our way back home, I regret even more that we walked all the way home! I was exhausted after that, the walk was longer than I originally expected.

We had dinner with the family in the evening again, leftovers of the lasagna and some pizza. We have been very well fed here :)
