First week, second day

Tuesday morning, and a cup of coffee. It wasn't as good as I hoped, mostly due to the fact that I made it quite weak. Took some time to get the knack of making coffee with a press pot, to get the amount of coffee right.

Got to the college, and noticed this in the room we changed our clothes in :D

Helped a 1st-year student with prep. We made fillings for pancakes, roasted veggies in tomato sauce. They also had bacon and maple syrup. Not exactly what we eat with pancakes at home :D we do make savoury pancakes, but they are usually filled with meat mixed in sour cream, for example.

There were also a huge amount of potatoes to be peeled. Thank goodness there were two of us to do that.

Lunch prep was done in five hours, and then we got a few hours' break. The teacher from my school, the younger student and I decided to go and explore town. We walked. Again. Luckily the centre of town isn't that far.

We got to the mall, Vancouver Quarter, where there are dozens and dozens of shops, stores, cafés and restaurants. Since it was less than a week until Valentine's Day, I found a stall selling cards. I found the perfect one to send to my fiancé!

The stall did not sell "tourist-y" cards, so the salesman provided me with directions to this place. Got the rest of the cards to send out and as a bonus, found a cool hologram bookmark with a beautiful red dragon on it.

Next I needed stamps. Got directions to WHSmith, which has a post office inside. Found it, and just had to walk around the store a little.

Glad I did, because otherwise I wouldn't had found this! Bake Off recipes!

Walked around a bit more and then took the bus back to the college; they wanted us in for dinner service, too.

I got my very own station. I prepped scallops, separating the roe from the scallop and then getting the roe dried. I've no idea what the dried and powdered scallop roe is used for, I'll have to ask when I go back to college.

After prep we started service. I got to make the scallop starter by myself, which was highly enjoyable.

The dish, ready to go. Deep fried parsnip peels, pureed parsnip, pomegranite and scallops.

The dinner service just flew by. I enjoyed working on my own, using my own creativity, showing what I can do.

Before heading back home, had a really great dinner at the pub next door the college. Beer battered cod with chips and mushy peas, and an ice cold Bulmers to wash it down. Yum!
